Sepulchral Reflections was commissioned in the Spring of 2021 by one of my former students and good friends, Drew Neal. The word sepulchral means "of the tomb," so the piece is about the thoughts of someone who is about to die. I have no experience with being about to die, and hope not to have any for a very long time. When I think about what this experience must feel like, I think of two things, which the two movements of this piece are meant to portray: passing through a mysterious forest with the silhouette of thousands of hooded figures watching over you, and the feeling of walking towards nothing in particular as you slowly fade away into blackness.
